Road Test: 2004 Lexus GX470
By Thomas E. Bonsall
Introduced in 2003, the Lexus GX 470 is the brand's mid-size SUV. New features for 2004 include a Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM), roll-sensing side curtain air bag system and rear backup camera that comes with the optional navigation system.
An optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) enhances on-road handling and off-road capability by hydraulically varying sway resistance provided by the front and rear stabilizer bars. In January, the editors of Four Wheeler Magazine named the GX 470 their "Four Wheeler of the Year" by. The competing GX 470 was equipped with the new KDSS.
The GX 470 combines the luxury and workmanship of a Lexus sedan with an innovative full-time four-wheel drive system augmented by an array of dynamic handling systems. A Torsen torque-sensing center differential splits the power 40 percent front / 60 percent rear under most conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on steering input and wheelslip. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC) augment the standard low-range gearing to help the GX 470 handle steep off-highway inclines. The Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system helps control loss of lateral traction during cornering in challenging driving conditions. Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) in the GX 470 include dual front and side airbags and side curtain airbags. A DVD-based Lexus Navigation System, rear seat audio and rear seat DVD entertainment systems are available as options.
That sure makes for a lot of acronyms, but the results speak for them selves. At a base price of $45,075, the GX 470 offers solid value in this market segment. Recommended. R&D
