Fulfilling The Dream – Then Driving it Better
Underline to the heading, Fulfilling the dream and then driving it better.

On fulfilling the dream of owning a Porsche, I decided that I wanted to get some additional training in order to get the most out of it. My aim in enrolling on the Ride Drive Advanced Road Driving and Car Control Course was to understand what the limits of the car were as well as learning about how to best exploit its performance on the public road.

My Day Began at Amersham Where I Met Ken

Lawrence Rigby at the wheel of his Porsche Boxster sports carOn meeting my trainer for the day, Ken, we hit the road almost straight away. The format was simple – as I drove he gave me advice on how I could improve my driving style.

He talked me through techniques on how to progress quicker at the same time as focussing on safety, observation and smoothness.

Given that we would be spending 8–hours together, I was pleased that he was friendly, clear and good humoured – as well as clearly being a highly competent driver!

Learning About Car Control in a Safe Environment

After spending the morning taking in some really good country routes, my next lessons were learnt within the controlled environment of an airfield. We explored how the car reacted both with and without traction control and how the dynamics of the car were upset if corners were tackled inappropriately.

I found the airfield session probably the most useful, as this is where I really begun to understand the car. However, it would not have made as much sense had I not been given the opportunity to apply what I had learnt to the road straight afterwards.

In the afternoon we continued our drive on the road, and thanks to the airfield session, I was now able to keep the car more stable at the same time as going round corners faster than previously. We also looked at more effective overtaking as well as putting all of the new techniques into practice.

On the Final Leg it All Came Together

It was on the final country road of the day that I realised how much I had learnt. We had covered this stretch at the beginning of the day and on our return my progress was smoother, faster and more planted. Despite the fact that on our return I did not need to apply the brakes, I carried far more speed along the road.

One of the key things I learned was about being in the correct gear at all times and using the brakes less. I also learnt quite a lot about observation, positioning and always being ready to dealwith anything. The result is the car is now even more rewarding and enjoyable to drive, and I can only but highly recommend a Ride Drive course. It really does compliment the car every time I drive it.
